Vice President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to adopt a positive attitude towards identifying and eradicating the perceived corruption in the judiciary and other institutions in the country.
He described corruption as a social canker that has affected both the public and private lives of the society thereby calling for a proactive measure rather than the defensive stance that some people have adopted towards its elimination.
Vice President Mahama was speaking at the final funeral rites of the late Farhan Larry Bimi, Chairman of the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE), held at the State House in Accra on Saturday July 30.
Four Accra-based lawyers were recently blacklisted by the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana for alleging that there was corruption in the judiciary.
They were therefore asked to either substantiate the allegations they made against some judges in the country or retract and apologise.
The lawyers included the late Larry Bimi, Dr Raymond Atuguba, David Annan and Abraham Amaliba.
The Vice President expressed worry over the seemingly defensive stance taken by the General Legal Council on the alleged corruption in the judiciary sparked by the late Larry Bimi.
According to the Vice President “our attitude to this argument and controversy would change to a more positive one that we concede that corruption is a canker that affects all facets of our public and private lives and that rather than being defensive about it, we must adopt a more positive attitude towards identifying and minimizing it or if possible eradicating corruption.
"That I think would be a fitting tribute to the memory of the man Larry Bimi”.
Vice President Mahama paid glowing tribute to the late Bimi saying he would be remembered for the “good works he left in the sands of time.”
The 66 year-old Lawyer, former Ambassador cum teacher died on Friday, July 22 and was buried on Saturday, July 23 in conformity with Islamic traditions.
The funeral was attended by some Ministers, Members of the Council of State, Parliamentarians, Party Functionaries, Staff of NCCE from all over the country, relatives and sympathisers.
Other tributes were read by his wife, the Bimoba Youth Association, Old Vandals Association, NCCE, friends and family members.
