Abuakwa South Constituency MP, Samuel Atta Akyea has expressed displeasure with the Minority’s recent calls on the Special Prosecutor to take action against persons involved in corruption and corruption-related activities.

This follows a media engagement organised by the group in Parliament on Friday.

During the briefing, the Minority called on Kissi Agyebeng to stop pestering the former Chairman of the now-defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng.

They also urged the Special Prosecutor to arrest Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko and other government officials who were cited in Prof Frimpong-Boateng’s ‘galamsey’ report.

But Mr. Atta Akyea says the Minority cannot use press briefings to direct the Special Prosecutor on how he should fight illegal mining.

According to him, it will be an outrageous extension of the powers of Parliament if the Minority tries to interfere with the work of the Special Prosecutor.

“Let’s leave the Special Prosecutor to do his work. We have appointed him to do a good job and let’s leave him to do it.

“You should never stampede through the power of press conferences in the comfort of Parliament to achieve any result, it won’t work,” Mr Atta Akyea said on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday, June 17.

Mr Atta Akyea who also serves as the Chairman of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament stressed that the Special Prosecutor was working assiduously prior to the release of Prof Frimpong-Boatengs ‘galamsey’ report.

He explained that the Special Prosecutor would not be able to fight corruption if his work is subjected to a day-to-day Parliamentary investigation.

“If you ask the Special Prosecutor to arrest A, B, C or D of an individual, then it is an unfortunate dictatorship which Parliament should never dare to do.

“Because with state institutions, we know how to bring them before Parliament when they fall foul of the law and their duties. So I say that it is sad that the Minority is trying to push the Special Prosecutor into doing things to appease them,” he stated.

The Abuakwa South Constituency MP further asserted that the call for the arrest of Gabby Otchere-Darko and others by the Minority has a “political undertones”.
