Mr. Joe Ghartey, Member of Parliament (MP) for Essikado Ketan Constituency, has encouraged Ghanaian youth, especially those in politics, to develop respect for elders and authority, and stop making an “industry out of being rude”.
He was troubled that the airwaves continued to be avenues for such people to propagate their “unruly agenda” of degrading and insulting elders, adding, it was also regrettable that such people had either not achieved anything or were yet to get there.
Mr Ghartey made the appeal during the launch of this year’s Kuntum Festival celebration under the theme: “A Re-dedication of the Community to Traditional Values”.
The theme has been chosen to create awareness and retool society, particularly the current generation, to return to those social values that made society stayed intact devoid of rampant social vices.
Mr. Ghartey said some nations have fallen apart because some individuals chose to make a name and fame out of rudeness and insults.
He also talked about the need for selflessness and compassion for one another, knowing that we would leave this world with nothing.
Mr. Alfred Ekow Gyan, Deputy Western Regional Minister, said festivals continued to serve as tools for social cohesion and peace, and stimulated greater community empowerment, development and enhancement of social institutions.
He said government would continue to support and work with traditional authorities to preserve peace, law and order in society.
