Hives are raised welts on the skin that usually appear when the person has come into contact with an allergen. These welts may appear red or they may itch. When you press on skin affected by hives, it turns white. The best remedy for hives is to remove the allergen. As of 2012, there is no evidence that baby powder can cure or relieve hives.CausesHives can have many causes. The main cause is contact with an allergen such as a food to which the person is allergic. Examples include shellfish and eggs. Other allergens that may cause hives include animal dander, latex, insect bites, medications or pollen, according to PubMed Health.Stress, illness, infections, exercise, pressure on the skin, sunlight, heat, cold or excessive perspiration also can cause hives. When a person develops hives, it is important to isolate the cause and remove it to allow the hives to dissipate.Baby PowderBaby powder may be useful for hives that are caused by excessive sweating because the corn starch helps to remove moisture. However, it is unlikely that baby powder will reduce the appearance of hives because hives typically only go away once the allergen or irritant is removed, according to MayoClinic.com.Avoid using too much baby powder, especially on an infant, because it can get into the lungs and cause irritation.TreatmentsIf the allergen is unavoidable, such as pollen or another environmental allergen, your physician may be able to prescribe medications to reduce your body's reaction to the allergen.Antihistamines and oral corticosteroids can relieve hives. Both of these medications help your body control its allergic response and reduce the swelling, redness and itching associated with hives.Additionally, avoid hot showers and tight-fitting clothing as these may make hives worse, according to PubMed Health.
When to Consult a PhysicianIf your hives recur but you aren't sure what is causing them, consult your physician. You may need to undergo allergy testing to isolate the cause so you can avoid it in the future. If you have severe hives that are accompanied by swelling in the face and a reduced ability to breathe or swallow, seek emergency medical attention. Your physician may have to administer an emergency shot of epinephrine to reduce the swelling and open your airways.
