President John Mahama has asked the people of the Volta Region not to be swayed by the NPP’s promise of free Senior High School education.
He says the opposition NPP while in power achieved less in the area of education; describing the promise as impractical.
Mahama was addressing a mini-rally at Have in the Afadjato South constituency of the region. He asked Ghanaians not be fooled by the NPP's promise while pledging the NDC’s commitment to deliver on its promise.
He said, since Nkrumah’s era, the NDC is the only party that has a track record of delivering on its promise of improving educational infrastructure.
He cited the establishment of seven polytechnics during former President Rawlings’ administration, a number of community secondary schools and public universities.
“So when a party like that comes and tells you that this is its programmes and it would implement its programmes you can trust that promise because it is a party that has a track record of delivering on its promise.”
He further stated: “People who just want to win elections, just suddenly popped up out of the blue; you have no track record in delivering on education, and just because you want to fool the people, and win the election you say you will give us free SHS.”
President Mahama also tasked Ghanaians to be vigilant about the numerous promises being made by the NPP, saying the opposition party might even promise them free air.
“Soon they will promise free transport, everybody when going anywhere jump into any car and go free, soon they will promise free food, they will bring food to everybody’s house so that you can eat free, then they will promise free water, free accommodation, then they will even forget that God has given us air already, they will say free air”, he said.
