Nursing mothers have been advised not to allow their babies to be breastfed by different women because such situations pose health hazards to the babies.
The Midwifery Officer in-charge of the Apam Catholic Mission Hospital, Miss Barbara Quaye adviced expectant mothers at the Out-Patient Department of the hospital at Apam on Thursday.
She was speaking on the topic; “The importance of breast milk to the mother and child”.
It was aimed at preparing expectant mothers for safe delivery.
Miss Quaye said in most cases, breast feeding mothers left their babies in the care of their mothers and grandmothers for the market.
She said when the babies were crying, these women who do not have milk in their breast put their breasts in the mouth of the babies who innocently try to suck.
She described this situation as not good for the health of the babies and advised such women to desist from the practice.
The Midwife said newly-born babies should be fed on their mothers’ breast milk because it is the best protection a mother can give to her child.
Miss Quaye also appealed to expectant mothers to avoid self medication.
