The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Co-ordinator, Mr. Kofi Portuphy has asked politicians not to disrupt the demolition exercise planned by NADMO to remove about 45 houses in the Greater Accra Region which have been built on waterways.
He said, "anytime NADMO tries to take strict measures to demolish some buildings in the city for the safety of Ghanaians, people politicise it and that makes our effort useless. But this time the organisation will give no room for any political intervention following the disaster caused by last Friday's rams."Mr. Portuphy said NADMO had already started demolishing some houses around airport residential area.Speaking on an Accra radio station, Mr. Portuphy disclosed that, about 45 houses in the city of Accra would be demolished because they were built on waterways. He said the exercise was not targeted at buildings alone, but also containers and wooden shops blocking the waterways, especially at Sakaman, Kaneshie, Abosey Okai, Mataheko and other areas which were not affected by the rains.
Last Friday, the rains destroyed lots of valuable properties and about 7 people were reported dead.Mr Portuphy commented on the controversial 'Vilageo Estate', and ex-President Kufuor's residence at the airport. He confirmed that the former President's house was not on a waterway, adding that the problem was with 'Vilageo Estate'.However, he disclosed that the company managing the estate had negotiated with NADMO to lay down a drainage system to allow the water pass smooth1y, to prevent floods.Mr. Portuphy announced that the following numbers could be contacted 021-772926 and 0244444350 to assist NADMO in responding quickly to cases of floods and any other national disaster occurrence.Source: Ghanaian Times
