A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Awal Mohammed, says Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has the capacity to unite the party following its recent presidential primary.
According to him, beyond winning the flagbearer contest, Dr Bawumia’s performance across constituencies and his experience within the party position him well to lead reconciliation efforts.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Tuesday, February 3, Awal Mohammed said the Vice President’s track record shows he understands the dynamics of party unity.
“The thing is that yes, it’s true that Dr Bawumia is a man of his own and will be able to really unite this party,” he said.
He acknowledged that Dr Bawumia secured 56% of the votes in the latest primary, compared to the 61% he obtained in the previous contest, but insisted the figures should be viewed in proper context.
“When you look at the data and the number of people who voted for Dr Bawumia and the percentage, we are exceedingly happy with this result,” Awal Mohammed noted.
He explained that a constituency-by-constituency analysis presents a stronger picture of the Vice President’s support base within the party.
“When you check the data and the number of constituencies Dr Bawumia won this time, compared to the number of constituencies he won the last time when he had 61 per cent, this time is better,” he added.
Awal Mohammed said the outcome of the election provides a solid foundation for party cohesion as the NPP prepares for the next phase of its political activities.
Dr Bawumia emerged winner of the NPP presidential primary, paving the way for him to lead the party into the 2028 general elections, with party officials repeatedly calling for unity and collective effort going forward.
