Dr K.K. Sarpong, a former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), says he would not rule out serving in President John Mahama’s government if called upon to do so.
Dr Sarpong indicated that he would be willing to take up an advisory role similar to the Presidential Advisory Group on the Economy (PAGE), should his expertise be considered relevant.
“Why not? If I believe I have the expertise, why not?” he remarked in an interview with Channel One TV.
Dr Sarpong was among several professionals invited to contribute ideas at the 2025 National Economic Dialogue, which brought together experts from across the political divide to make recommendations on Ghana’s economic direction.
Addressing concerns about his political affiliation, he said his participation in the dialogue was entirely appropriate, despite being associated with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). According to him, national development should take precedence over partisan considerations.
When asked whether his involvement amounted to a betrayal of the NPP, Dr Sarpong dismissed the suggestion outright.
“They should be crazy. What is the essence of education? It should help us bring development to our people,” he said, adding that the new administration was right to seek broad-based expertise.
“I was glad I was invited, even though I belong to the other side. It wasn’t just me alone; people came from the NPP stock as well.”
