Sources at CAF have denied reports that the death of Dr Joseph Kabungo was caused by the ensuing violence at the Moshood Abiola stadium.

The Super Eagles missed out on a ticket to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after a 1-1 draw with the Black Stars in Abuja. The outcome of the result was greeted with anger by fans, who thronged to the 60,000-seater stadium and wreaked violence on the facility after the game.

The pitch was invaded and players of the Black Stars and Nigeria had to be escorted to their dressing room.

It was reported that CAF official, Dr Joseph Kabungo, who serves as a medical officer for the CAF, lost his life after he was beaten by rioting fans but CAF sources have falsified the reports.

However, CAF media officer Saanie Daara, revealed to JoySports that Nigeria are likely to face sanctions over the disturbances. He was speaking on JoyNews' PM Express.

“The match commissioner and the general coordinator for the game have been asked by CAF to provide reports – all of these things have gone viral or global so you’d expect that CAF would ask for a report and I know with what we’ve seen and based on previous experiences, there will be sanctions against Nigeria and the MKO Abiola Stadium for the way things went out of hand.”
