Investigations into the murder of the former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr Samuel Ennin, have taken a dramatic turn, with the Attorney-General's (AG's) Department saying it cannot go ahead with the prosecution of the' two suspects who are in custody because of fresh evidence allegedly linking a journalist to the murder.A Chief State Attorney, Mr William Pobee, told the Daily Graphic that the wife of the slain GJA regional chairman had alleged, during investigations, that she had seen the said journalist, whose name was not disclosed, with the suspects two days before her husband was killed.That was after the woman had seen the pictures of the suspects, Kwame Ayew and Sherif Kabore, in the newspapers after their arrest last year.Consequently, the AG's Department said it had returned the docket on the case to the police to investigate the said journalist for conspiracy.However, when the police were contacted last Friday, they said they had not received any docket from the AG's office.The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr Seth Oteng, said, “We will wait for the docket to see what to do next.”Mr Pobee said the matter had become complicated because of the new development and that it was only after further investigations by the police that any meaningful headway could be found.Pressed further to name the journalist and where he worked, Mr Pobee said the matter was murder investigation.He pointed out, however, that the fresh evidence did not, in any way, absolve the two suspects already in custody of the crime."We shall proceed with the matter immediately the police establish whether the allegation by the deceased's wife has any substance or not," Mr Pobee said.Mr Ennin was killed at the Libra Spot at Pankrono Estates in Kumasi about 8:00 p.m. on February 9, 2007 when he was enjoying drinks with some friends.He died just after arrival at the Komfo Anokye reaching Hospital.The police launched investigations into the case and arrested Ayew and Kabore. After a prima facie case had been established against them, the docket vas dispatched to the AG's Department for advice.Source: Daily Graphic
