A driver who was found to be driving while drunk was on Monday sentenced to a fine of 9.6 million cedis by the Motor Court in Accra.
John Freeman pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol and the court convicted him accordingly.
Freeman in default would serve six months imprisonment with hard labour.
Handing the down the deterrent sentence, the court said it took into consideration the quantum of alcohol intake, which read 426 per cent instead of 0.08 per cent and the spate of accidents, which occurred as result of drunk driving.
The case as presented by the prosecution read that when Freeman, who was driving a Nissan Sunny car with registration number GR 320 V, came to the Achimota main station at about 1900 hours on August 26 he was suspected to be drunk.
Police said when his alcohol level was tested, the alcometer read 426 per cent instead of 0.08 per cent.
The Police also found out that Freeman was driving without a license.Source: GNA
