Richard Essifie, a driver who allegedly knocked down a 52-year-old pedestrian on the General Acheampong High Street has appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court.
Essifie, driving his Daewoo Matiz Taxi with registration number AS 890-19, was said to have knocked the pedestrian at about 0435 hours along the General Acheampong High Street in the Greater Accra Region.
The pedestrian, Francis Yaw Osei, was said to have passed on while receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Charged with careless and inconsiderate driving and negligently causing harm, Essifie pleaded not guilty.
The accused was admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢30,000 with three sureties, all of whom must live within the jurisdiction of the court and must be public servants earning not less than GH¢2,000.
He was ordered to deposit his Ghana Card with the registry of the court and report to the police once every two weeks.
The case was adjourned to April 30.
Inspector Esther Mensah, the prosecutor, told the court, presided over by Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, that on February 15, 2025, the accused was driving his Daewoo Matiz Taxi from Dansoman Last stop towards the Kwame Nkrumah Circle along the General Acheampong High Street with two passengers on board.
On reaching a section of the road at Biggies Pub, Essifie, not observing traffic regulations, knocked down Francis Osei, who was crossing the road.
The prosecution said Osei sustained serious injuries on his head, and he was rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital Accident and Emergency Ward for treatment.
While on admission, he passed on.
The body was deposited at the hospital’s morgue for preservation and autopsy. The court heard that the vehicle also got damaged.
