The Pakyi District Court has sentenced a 23-year-old driver to 12 months’ imprisonment in hard labour for stealing a susu box containing over GH¢20,000.
Derick Appiah admitted to unlawfully entering the room of Ebenezer Agyei, the complainant, to steal the box.
He was convicted on his own plea, with sentencing deferred until August 5, 2025.
Police Chief Inspector Christian Amartey told the court that Agyei, aged 24, is a Station Master at Mpatasie, while Appiah is a driver.
Both reside in Mpatasie in the Ashanti Region and work together, but live in separate houses.
On July 29, 2025, Agyei left home and returned at about 0930 hours to discover that his room had been broken into and his susu box, containing over GH¢20,000, was missing.
Agyei raised an alarm, attracting two witnesses, Destrol and Agya Owusu, who informed him that they had seen Appiah earlier that day looking for him.
Suspicious, Agyei and the witnesses searched for Appiah and eventually arrested him.
During the arrest, some unidentified individuals assaulted Appiah, who was later taken to the hospital and subsequently handed over to the Trede Police.
Chief Inspector Amartey said in his cautionary statement, Appiah admitted to stealing the box but claimed he did not know the exact amount it contained.
He later led his mother to the hidden box, which she retrieved and submitted to the police.
The recovered GH¢2,047 was retained as evidence, and Appiah was subsequently charged, convicted, and sentenced.
