Drivers in the Nkwanta district are in a tussle over who could occupy a terminal.
The GNA reports that the Nkwanta district branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union is pushing to oust the Ghana National Cargo Transport Union (GCNTA) from the district. It said the tussle has halted the carting of yams and other foodstuff to the southern parts of the country for the past week.
The Offices of the GCNTA at Kpassa was allegedly vandalized and the personnel attacked.
The Nkwanta District Crime Officer, Detective Inspector Hayford Asempa, confirmed the incident to the GNA and said some suspects were arrested to assist in investigations.
He said the District Security Committee invited the two bodies for an amicable settlement but the GPRTU failed to honour it.
Mr Akilu Suleman, Nkwanta District Chairman of the GPRTU told the GNA that his Union was acting on appeals by traders and farmers to transport their cargoes down South because they were not satisfied with the services of the GCNTA.
He said the offices being occupied by the GCNTA in the district belonged to the GPRTU and that the latter needed the offices now because it has created a cargo unit.
Mr Suleman said the GCNTA had for the past four years refused to pay 10 percent of its incomes to the GPRTU as condition for using those offices.
However, the GCNTA District Chairman, Mr Salifu Bukari, said the offices belonged to all transport owners in the district who contributed money to establish them.
He said the GPRTU has taken over the offices of the GCNTA at Kpassa and Kue and inflicted cutlass wounds on 10 of its officers and personnel.
