The Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (E.P. Church, Ghana) and the Old Mawuli Students Union (OMSU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The MoU, which was signed on the 9th of March, 2023, is to establish guidelines for collaboration between the E.P Church and the OMSU in the appointment of the head of the school.

This is in accordance with Ghana Education Service (GES) appointment criteria between the mission (E.P Church Ghana) and Government (GES).

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana since its establishment in 1847 has established about seven second-cycle schools of which Mawuli School is one of them. Founded in 1950, it was the first senior high school to be established in the Trans-Volta Togoland. 

The church, since the establishment of the school, has contributed exceptionally to the management of the school to achieve high moral and academic standards, self-discipline among its graduates.

Since 1984, Mawuli School has churned out graduates called Old Mawuli Students Union (OMSU) which has contributed immensely towards the development of the school.

For some time now, the appointment of the head of the school became a problem between the Church and the OMSU which necessitated the MoU.

With the MoU, the OMSU will be included in the decision-making body, especially in choosing a head for the school.

The E.P. Church which founded the Mawuli School will henceforth give priority to the OMSU in the appointment process of the head of the school in accordance with the criteria of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

OMSU will also be given a seat on the panel that will interview the Headmaster of the School.

OMSU President, Richard Nyakong noted that it is about having a stake in the school as stakeholders and Old students who have the interest of their Alma matter at heart. 

Mr Nyakong noted that there is so much gap as to what government can do for the school and what the school needs and as old students, they have done so much to improve on the development of the school, thus being involved in the selection process will help them even do more for the school.  

Mr Nyakong promised that the best headmaster will be suggested to continue the good works of the predecessors.

The Headmaster of the school, Mr Gustav Adomah noted that signing the MoU will enable a smooth selection of heads of the school. 

Mr Adomah said the signing of the MoU will help prevent certain issues associated with the appointment of headmasters for the school. 

"You can just imagine. There is this idea that when two elephants fight, it’s the grass that suffers. So when the church and the old students were dragging this issue, it is the school that was suffering, for that matter the headmaster.

“You know, the OMSU is one of the biggest financiers of Mawuli School. At the point of appointment of the current headmaster, they decided to withdraw all their services. It was hell for us.

“Even though we managed the situation and we got some of them on board, we believe it would have been better if they had come on board fully ready,” Adomah noted.

Regional Manager for the EP School Unit, Mrs Maria Adzroe noted that she was happy that the MoU has been signed to enable the two parties to have a common ground to operate. 

Mrs Adzroe noted the Old Students Association is a major stakeholder when it comes to developmental projects and hence the need to involve them in the process.  

The moderator of the E P, Rev. Lt. Col. Bliss Divine Kofi Agbeko (Rtd) noted that it is important to have the old students involved in the decision-making process of the school to help ensure enough development. 

However, the agreement is not between the OMSU and the Ghana Education Service, but the church and it is subject to negotiation.
