Member of Parliament of Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, says the government should reintroduce road tolls rather than increasing tax revenue.
For him, reintroducing the road toll could assist the government in generating revenue amidst the current economic challenges.
He was speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday, November 15.

“I mean this government must just swallow its humble pie and reintroduce road tolls. We are talking about the future of Public Private Partnership and dualising Accra- Cape Coast, Accra- Kumasi, you certainly can do so by taking advantage of road tolls,” he said.
In November 2021, the Roads Ministry directed the suspension of toll collection on all public roads and bridges across the country.
The Finance Minister in a subsequent presentation of the 2022 budget explained that the move was to enhance productivity and reduce environmental pollution.
He also suggested that it was geared towards reducing the heavy traffic that road tolls are found to cause nationwide.
But the Tamale Central MP insists that “what you need is to find an investor who comes in, gets the road done. 25 or 50 years, he takes his money to the road tolls.”
This comes ahead of the presentation of the 2024 Budget Statement by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta today.
