Chairman of Electoral Commission, Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan has been summoned before Parliament today to answer questions on the botched district level elections.

The meeting to be held behind closed doors is expected to come up with a roadmap towards the election.

The Supreme Court in a unanimous decision declared the impending elections as unconstitutional.

It said it commenced preparations when the constitutional instrument to guide the election was yet to mature.

The tenure of the current assembly members has ended and will be dissolved on Sunday.

Deputy Minority leader, Dominic Nitiwul says the nation is at a crossroad with the District level elections and wants the EC boss to retire in dignity in the face of a potential constitutional crisis.

“The EC [chair] might not be able to conduct the District Assembly elections and may retire because of age because by June-July Dr Afari Gyan should be leaving and a new commissioner appointed. We just pray as a nation that the does not retire in disgrace.

“If he is not able to conduct the district assembly elections which should have been done last year October, and he leaves it will not be good for him at all”, he continued.

Mr Nitiwul said parliament is prepared to listen to the EC and appropriately put in measures to ensure that the situation does not recur in the future.

He noted that the new Constitutional Instrument (CI) which will be presented in parliament today will require a 21-day-sitting before it matures enough to be used by the commission. This he says will push the elections into July.

Ministers for Finance and Local Government are also expected in parliament to brief the house on the same subject.
