The Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday met with the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) in Accra to educate the group on the biometric voter registration and verification system.
The EC took them through the registration processes and requirements during which MUISGA president, Bice Osei Kuffuor aka Obour and other members participated in a mock registration exercise to ascertain the authenticity of equipment.
Speaking at the workshop in Accra, the EC’s Acting Director of Public Affairs, Christian Owusu Parry said the biometric voter register will not only help check double registration but also guide the commission in the distribution of materials on voting day.
He said “If we do not have a voters’ register it will be difficult for the EC to determine how many people will turn up at a particular registration center (polling station) come Election Day in order to send the appropriate quantity of materials to those places.”
Mr. Parry said the register will also guide political parties in the selection of candidates.
“Politicians can use the register to plan their campaigns. They always want to see where the numbers are quite large so they can concentrate more efforts there to win a lot of votes,” he added.
He said: “if we do not have a voters’ register it will be very difficult for us to verify the credibility of election results. At the end of every election, we want to see the number of people who turned out at a poll and then mark it against the results which are declared.”
Mr. Parry appealed to MUSIGA to help create awareness and educate the general public on the biometric voter registration exercise which begins on Saturday, March 24 and ends on Thursday, May 5.
Obuor promised that the association will add its voice to the education campaign to make the exercise a success.
“We are thinking of ways to partner the EC to send the message across to the masses so that a lot of people will come out to register when the exercise begins,” he said.
He said MUSIGA is embarking on a campaign to tell Ghanaians to vote peacefully come December 7.
He called on all political parties to tolerate one another. This he said was to ensure that Ghana remains a peaceful nation before, during and after the general elections.
