Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed worry over the Electoral Commission’s adamance to heed to concerns raised by his party ahead of the compilation of the new voters’ register.
Elvis Afriyie Ankrah in an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show, said it is “a practical impossibility for the Electoral Commission to register 17 million people” in the rainy season and within the coronavirus pandemic.
Thus, the exercise could result in the exclusion of thousands of prospective voters.
“Over time, a large number of Ghanaians will come to appreciate the concerns and position of the NDC, including civil society and ordinary people,” he said.
He further added that several Ghanaians have not registered for the National Identification Card, hence although the distribution of the card is important, NIA needs to go back to areas where people were not registered and register them.
“The number of people captured by the NIA so far is less than the people who voted in 2016,” he retorted.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has however set Tuesday, June 30, to compile a new voters’ register for the presidential and parliamentary elections in December 2020.
According to a statement signed by the Deputy Chairperson of the Commission, the exercise will be held at all registration centres and district offices of the EC throughout the country.
