The Electoral Commission (EC) office in Damongo, located in the Savannah Region, has been set ablaze this afternoon, following escalating tensions during the collation of election results.
According to JoyNews reporter Isaac Nongya, the incident is suspected to have been caused by a group of youth purportedly aligned with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The group reportedly demanded that the EC prioritise the declaration of the parliamentary results over the presidential results.
The EC's response, indicating that they were focused on the presidential collation before turning to the parliamentary results, did not sit well with the agitated crowd.
In a sudden turn of events, the situation escalated, culminating in the burning of the EC office.
Mr Nongya reports that electoral materials in the building were all burnt.
"They found their way to the collation centre two times and on the third, overpowered the police, entered and vandalised any electoral materials from the EC office.
"On their first two visits, they met the military on the premises and were sacked. However, since the military was later driven away, they overpowered the police and had their way," he narrated.
He added that the group also vandalised other offices of the building.
Also, personal property such as a motorbike on the premises was set on fire
“Beyond this, they went and set fire to the store room of the EC. Every material inside the store room has been burnt down.”
Mr. Nongya explained that the structure set ablaze was originally the District Magistrate Court for the West Gonja Municipality. However, it has not been used for judicial purposes and was repurposed by the Electoral Commission as its office. He further noted that the facility had also served as the collation center during the 2020 elections.
