Government has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to work faster on the appropriate amendments to the constitution to pave way for the November 7 general election.
Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, who made the call explains that the amendment will limit the number of days or the time frame within which an individual could challenge the outcome of an election in the country.
He was speaking at a programme organized by the youth wing of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Wa central constituency of the Upper West region.
“We need to do a review because we are changing [general elections date] from December 7 to November 7 and even more importantly on how many days and how long anybody can challenge election's outcome,” he said.
Meanwhile, the EC has assured the public the postponement of the limited voter registration from March to April will not affect preparations for the country’s general polls in November.
Director of Public Affairs at the EC, Christian Owusu Parry, told Joy News the exercise was rescheduled to April because the legal instrument for the election is yet to be passed.
“We are operating within a certain time. We are confident that if we start the registration exercise at the time that we are rescheduling this exercise we will still be able to run the elections calendar and be able to deliver the elections on November 7 as indicated,” Parry stated.
