Ten state institutions, including the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), owe the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) over GH¢1 billion in taxes.
This was revealed during a public accounts committee sitting on Monday, July 29, by GRA officials.
Some entities, like GACL and Graphic Communications Group, cited cashflow challenges but indicated their intention to pay once their financial situations improved.
The committee raised concerns about less viable entities like the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR). A GRA official noted, “GACL and Graphic Communications currently are having cashflow challenges.
"They’ve indicated to us that we need to give them a moratorium to be able to come back to us. So, for them, they are prepared to pay once theircash flow improves.”
Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Abena Osei Asare, mentioned that in cases where companies are unlikely to pay their taxes, the government may seek parliamentary approval to write off the debts.
“If it becomes necessary after all avenues to collect these monies have failed, we will go through that process and then come to parliament for permission to do that,” she stated.
