As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Ecobank Ghana has presented an amount of Ghc 10,000 to the Glaucoma Association of Ghana (GAG). The presentation was made by the Head of Communications and Public Relations of Ecobank Ghana, Mr. D. Kasser Tee on behalf of the Bank and was received by Mr. Harrison Kofi Abutiate, the President of the Association. Speaking at a brief ceremony in Accra, Mr. Kasser Tee said; “the presentation is in line with Ecobank’s donations and sponsorships policy, which covers Health, Education, Underprivileged Children, Employment Generation and Green Issues. And that is why today’s donation and the larger CSR policy of the bank are aligned with Ecobank’s vision of building a world class Pan African Bank and contributing to the economic and financial development of Africa”. He also added that Ecobank has, in the recent past, made cash and kind donations to various institutions in Ghana, including the presentation of USD200, 000 to the Children’s Block of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for the provision of special machines and equipment that were in dire need by the hospital to help save lives of the numerous children seeking healthcare there. On his part, Mr. Abutiate expressed gratitude to Ecobank Ghana for the kind gesture and promised that the donation would be put to good use. He called on individual Ghanaians to voluntarily join the Association and to commit themselves to making small contributions towards the worthy cause of creating awareness about the disease. Glaucoma, he emphasized, is no respecter of person, and can therefore affect anybody at anytime, including the poor and the rich in society and, if left untreated, glaucoma leads to total blindness. Mr Abutiate further indicated that the Glaucoma Association of Ghana intends to maintain a lifelong glaucoma awareness creation relationship with Ecobank. He announced March 12, 2013 as the date for the World Glaucoma Week 2013 (WGW 2013) under the theme; “This world is a wonder to see everyday…. So don’t let glaucoma get in the way”. As part of the launch, the association will conduct eye screening for Members of the new Parliament, to show appreciation and support to its Patron, the Rt. Hon. Justice Joyce Bamford- Addo (former Speaker of Parliament) and inmates of the Nsawam Prisons. The Glaucoma Association of Ghana is an organization that seeks to prevent Glaucoma, an eye related disease, which causes blindness in all manner of persons. It is a disease that is affecting a lot of people, leading to blindness and the Association was therefore formed for the main purpose of creating mass awareness about the disease. It is a voluntary association that was inaugurated on June 20th 1990 with membership open to anybody with or without glaucoma.
