The Accra Regional Police Command has mounted a manhunt for a six-member robbery gang suspected to be behind the Madina Ecobank robbery of June 23, 2008.
One of the suspects, George Kofi Afoakwah, aka Not Nice, slipped through the fingers of the police when they raided his hideout.
According to the police, a raid at the hideout of Not Nice at Mallam yielded no results as they were obstructed by his sister, Charlotte Afoakwah, his girlfriend Stella Murphy and others who screamed to draw a large crowd to the scene, making way for his escape through the ceiling.
As a result, Charlotte Afoakwah, Stella Murphy, one Oduro Samuel, and Gifty Adubuira were arrested and later granted police enquiry bail.
The police believe that Not Nice and his gang could be hiding in and around Kokrobite, Weija, Mallam or Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, where he hails from.
The police are therefore appealing to members of the general public who may know the whereabouts of the group especially George Kofi Afoakwah aka Not Nice, to volunteer information to the Regional Police Headquarters or any nearby police station.
During the said robbery, the gang killed a police officer who was on duty that morning and escaped with a steel box containing an amount of GH¢60,400.
The gang leaders, according to police investigations, have been identified as Awudu Mahama and his brother Fatau Mahama.
The two who are said to have parents of Ghanaian origin but born and bred in Nigeria and protégés of Ataa Ayi, a notorious armed robber who is now serving a prison term at the Nsawam Medium Prisons, led the group of robbers namely George Kofi Afoakwah aka Not Nice, his brother Yaw Afoakwah also known as Dadese and some two others suspected to be Nigerians.
The police said any information that may lead to the arrest of these wanted criminals who have been involved in a series of robberies in the country, would attract a reward of GH¢4000.00.
