The Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Amin Hamidu Sulemani has stated that education should not be left to educational authorities alone to handle. He said it should be the primary function of every Municipal and District Assembly to carry out a desired review to identify areas that need to be tackled to improve the quality of education at all levels. Alhaji Sulemani made the statement at the 2012 annual sector review of the upper west region in Wa. The two day review meeting which is being held on the theme ‘‘Education, our priority for sustainable development’’ brought all stakeholders in the sector to meet, discuss and share plans, successes, experiences and challenges encountered by the education directorate in the region in the previous year and suggest and formulate strategies to improve education delivery in the coming year. The Regional Minister noted that public schools are not producing the desired results for various reasons among which are lack of adequate infrastructure and lack of adequate supervision. He is convinced, however that in the midst of these challenges they can do better if they intensify monitoring, supervision and enforcement of discipline among teachers and pupils. ‘‘Let us bear in mind that with the best infrastructure, best results cannot be achieved without effective monitoring and supervision and discipline. There is therefore the need for all stakeholders to play their respective roles as policy makers, educational authorities, implementers and parents for the desired results to be achieved,’’ Alhaji Sulemani added. He further stated education over the years has been a major priority of the NDC government, adding that formal education is central to the national development aspirations of the country. He said the government is focused on infrastructural development by pursuing various programs in the educational sector for accelerated economic growth and development of the country. The Minister said the elimination of schools under trees has been the main focus of the government and a number of such schools have been eliminated. Moreover, most schools particularly the Senior High Schools have seen significant development and more importantly, two new Senior High Schools in Gbollu and Funsi are also under construction. “From January 2009 to February 2012 a total number of 276 projects have been awarded and out of this, 112 have been completed and are been used. 140 are still ongoing and are at various stages of completion’‘. The Upper West regional director of the Ghana education service, Mahama Iddrisu said the region has received among other things, its fair share of the free school uniforms, books, school infrastructure and vehicles to some schools and districts especially the very latest, Lambussie-Karni district. He stated that monitoring and supervision has been intensified following the abysmal performance in 2011 BECE, hoping that the 2012 results will be better.
