Reggae musician Ekow Micah, who is facing trial for possessing illegal substance, wee, has been acquitted and discharged Monday by an Accra Circuit Court.

Ekow was arrested by the Airport Police on August 4 over an alleged extortion case against Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, currently under investigations.

The following day, at about 1130 hours, the Police and the accused person visited his house to conduct a search and in the process, a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp was found concealed in Micah’s “back pack”.

Prosecution claimed after an examination at the Police Forensic Crime laboratory, the substance turned out to be marijuana popularly called wee.

The musician succeeded in casting doubt over the allegation of possessing illegal substance. He said two hours prior to him being escorted to the house by police, an unidentified man had visited the house and succeeded in deceiving the sister, Lily Okyere, who was the only one in the house, to leave the house to buy him water.

The judge in his ruling said that the accused indicated that when his sister returned with the water, the man had moved from where he was earlier to another place where the substance was subsequently found.

This evidence was corroborated by the defence witness and was not challenged by the prosecution.

The judge said the suggestion by the prosecution that the unidentified man only went to the house with phone and not drugs pointed to the fact that the prosecution knew the man.

This, the judge said, created some doubt in prosecution’s case, indicating that the police were unable to prove the guilt of Ekow Micah.

The judge rejected the police caution statement which was in evidence that no witness signed Ekow Micah’s statement when he was arrested, which was against the law of evidence.

The court therefore acquitted and discharged Ekow Micah. The musician shouted Jah Rastafari and cried in court shortly after the ruling.
