Inspector-General of Police (IGP), James Oppong-Boanuh has said security personnel will ensure strict adherence to Covid-19 safety protocols during the December 7 elections.
According to the IGP, the enforcement of mask-wearing and social distancing among electorate in every polling stations is crucial in curbing the transmission of the novel coronavirus.
Addressing a news conference on Wednesday, Mr Oppong-Boanuh explained that; “Security personnel will enforce mask wearing and social distances at polling stations. We also expect voters to wash their hands… before they present them self to vote.”
As part of the safety measures to minimise the spread of the virus, the initiative by the National Election Security Taskforce is set to fortify the intervention of the Electoral Commission, thus not more than 700 voters will be allowed at a polling station.
The Police, aside putting measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus, also laid down measures to control violence as the country heads to the polls to elect a President and Members of Parliament (MPs) in 32 days.
Mr Oppong-Boanuh also stated that persons who are found to breach the law and indulge in any activity that poses a threat to a peaceful election will be dealt with.
The Police Service has touted measures they have put in place to have a peaceful election.
According to the Police Director of Operations, Dr Sayibu Pabi Gariba said paying keen attention to several incidents, the National Election Security Taskforce has drawn lessons that would inform deployments of officers on the election day.
