The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) and all relevant stakeholders to ensure that the upcoming December 7 elections are conducted in a transparent, free, and fair manner.
He stressed that a level playing field is essential to maintaining Ghana’s democratic values, preserving peace, and preventing disputes over perceived electoral injustices.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the 9th Congregation of Ensign Global College on Saturday, November 16, at Kpong in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region, Togbe Afede underscored the importance of electoral integrity in fostering public trust.
He stressed that it is vital for the entire electoral process to be transparent and accessible to all voters.
Togbe Afede emphasised the need for transparency at every stage of the voting process, particularly when it comes to ballot box placement.
He explained that voters should be able to freely and secretly cast their ballots while ensuring that the process remains visible to prevent any form of manipulation.
"We must ensure a system where people go to polling stations, select their ballots in a transparent manner, and enter voting booths where they can be observed to ensure no foreign materials are introduced," he said.
The Agbogbomefia further stressed that transparency should not compromise the secrecy of the ballot.
"It is essential that while ballots remain secret, the overall process must be visible to all. This way, voters can be seen picking their ballot papers and entering the booths, which reassures the public that no irregularities are taking place,” he stated.
