As Ghana prepares for the national presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for December 7, 2024, the Eminent Persons Group aims to prioritise peace, tolerance, and transparency throughout the electoral process.
The Eminent Persons Group of the Christian Council of Ghana has called on political parties to accept the results of the upcoming December 7 polls.
The Co-Chairperson of the Eminent Persons Group, Most Rev Dr. Paul K. Boafo, speaking to JoyNews has charged the political parties to ensure that the peace pact they signed is reflected in their behavior and extended to the public.
“For the political parties and their leaders, we thank God for their lives, and we thank God that even in them we see that we have people who are ready to serve and to serve Ghanaians. We thank them for the campaigns that they have done. We see that there are minimal attacks on personalities this year-round, and we say it's a good thing.
"But coming out of this, let us see it reflects in the voting, the coalition and the declaration. Whoever is declared the winner, we should all rally behind and support so that we can move on. In a democratic way, by voting, we know whom the people of Ghana have decided to lead us, and it should be peaceful so that we can continue to live in peace for generations even yet unborn.
"So we believe that where we have called on our people in the mosque, in the churches, our members will go out there with that spirit. And as Christians, I can say that blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God”.
Ghana has a proud tradition of maintaining peaceful democratic elections, and it is imperative that the legacy is upheld.
All political parties, their leadership, and supporters have therefore urged to act in a spirit of peace and tolerance.
The Group maintains that it is essential that candidates for both parliamentary and presidential positions exercise utmost leadership by promoting unity and refraining from rhetoric that could incite division or violence.
Rev. Dr. Boafo in his statement called on all stakeholders including the state security agencies, the media, and faith-based societies among others to maintain professionalism and neutrality during elections and urged the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare ensure that the agency’s commitment to impartiality and professionalism reflects in their actions on the voting day and beyond.
The police according to the Co-chair of the Eminent Persons Group urged them to ensure that every citizen exercises their right to vote without fear or intimidation.
The group therefore urged all Ghanaians to hold the country as one nation despite differences in political affiliations and ethnic backgrounds, adding that it is paramount to be vigilant and report any incidents of violence or election malpractice to the appropriate authorities
