Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged all stakeholders in the December 2024 elections to prioritise peace, unity, and responsibility as Ghana approaches its ninth presidential election under the Fourth Republic.
Speaking at the 4th Peace Pact ceremony in Accra on Thursday, November 28, where all 12 presidential candidates reaffirmed their commitment to a peaceful electoral process, Dr Bawumia reflected on Ghana's enduring democratic legacy.
Highlighting the country's resilience since 1992, Dr Bawumia noted that while each election presents unique challenges, Ghanaians have consistently upheld democracy as their chosen path.
"Every general election in Ghana, since 1992, has had its own dynamics, and the stakes are always high. Yet, we have never abandoned democracy because it is the right way forward," he stated.
Dr Bawumia stressed that democracy extends beyond periodic elections, encompassing respect for the constitution and the rule of law.
He expressed optimism that Ghana would once again demonstrate its commitment to democratic values, setting an example for the continent.
“As we approach the December 2024 polls, I am confident of two outcomes: Ghana will win, and peace will prevail. We have done this before and can do so again, proving that our democracy remains resilient," he affirmed.
Calling for responsibility from all participants, Dr Bawumia urged politicians, electoral officials, and citizens alike to avoid actions that might undermine the electoral process.
“My plea is for everyone involved to show that we are committed democrats. My hope, and that of the NPP, is that this election will leave us stronger as a nation, securing a brighter future for the youth. We owe them that duty," he added.
Assuring his full cooperation, he pledged to work with all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and credible election, concluding: "The eyes of the world are on Ghana, expecting us to once again shine as the beacon of democracy in Africa."
