The Volta Regional Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kafui Sorkpa Agbleze, has stated that the party will continue to protect the Volta Region, which has historically been a stronghold for the NDC.
The region has been referred to as the party's "world bank," but current voting patterns show the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gaining grounds.
At a press conference in Ho on Wednesday, 30th October, NPP Communications Director Richard Ahiagba stated that the NPP aims to secure around 500,000 votes in the upcoming December elections.
The NPP is optimistic about achieving this target, considering the progress they have made in the last four years in the region. In the 2016 elections, the NPP received 10.81% of the total votes cast, and this figure rose slightly to 14.14% in 2020.
However, Kafui Agbleze disagreed, asserting that the NDC will not relinquish the region. He stated, “We remain committed to protecting our historic stronghold and ensuring that the Volta Region continues to stand firm with the NDC. We urge the public to see through the NPP’s empty promises and to stand with us in rejecting the propaganda they continue to peddle.”
He called on the NPP to focus on rebuilding the country’s economy rather than raising hopes in the region. “Instead of concentrating on unscientific and delusional goals, perhaps the NPP should take a closer look at the devastating damage they have inflicted on our economy and the lives of ordinary Ghanaians. Their penchant for making unrealistic projections only reinforces the disconnect between their rhetoric and reality. This is the kind of falsehood that got the NPP into power, but it is also the reason they are rapidly losing credibility across the nation.”
Kafui added that the NPP’s target is unachievable, as they have never met any of their targets in the region in the past. “For the NPP to assume that they could win nearly half of the votes in the Volta Region is not only absurd but frankly insulting to the intelligence of Voltarians. The NPP has, for decades, set one unrealistic target after another in this region, and each time, they have failed miserably.”
The Communications Officer therefore called on the people of the region to demonstrate their unwavering support for the NDC in the upcoming election, as the NDC is the only party capable of redeeming the region and Ghana as a whole. Currently, the Volta Region has a total of 1,023,147 registered voters.
