With less than seven months to the general elections, political activities including rallies and campaigns are yet to kick start due to the coronavirus outbreak in Ghana.
While the recent easing of some restrictions put in place by President Akufo-Addo is a sign of hope at the end of the tunnel, there still remains a ban on some public gatherings including political rallies and sporting activities.
But Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah who was hosted on JoyNews' 'Beyond the Lockdown' on Sunday, May 31 says the December general elections must take place despite the existence of the Covid-19 global pandemic.
Although both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) are in support of this stance, a legal tussle continues to brew between the Electoral Commission (EC), the institution tasked to organize elections in Ghana and some coalitions in the country over the compilation of a new voters register before the December polls.
The brouhaha which has led to several demonstrations and press conferences has resulted in jabs and counter-jabs from all opposing sides.
In view of this, Head of the Political Desk at JoyNews, Evans Mensah, and the team has put together a new political show ‘Election Brief’, where issues leading to the build-up of the December elections will be addressed.

Stakeholders, political party representatives, and election experts will get the opportunity to be hosted by JoyNews’ Araba Koomson on the 30 minutes show that will air live on JoyNews TV and streamed via the various social media platforms.
Expressing her excitement about the initiative, Araba Koomson told MyJoyOnline.com that a political show of this nature is long overdue.
She said, with Multimedia known as the election headquarters in the country, it is only right for the station to set the pace.
“Here at JoyNews the pandemic has forced us to also push back our political programming but gradually there is an easing of restrictions and so the head of our political desk, Evans Mensah thought the time was ripe to kick start our political programs with ‘Election Brief’.
"The show will highlight the daily political events and electioneering news that may decide the polls this December.
“So I will be hosting the stakeholders every day and of course people should expect nothing but the best because this is your election headquarters.”
Airing from Monday to Friday, the National Chairman of the NPP, Freddy Blay is the first guest for the maiden event, today June 1.
