The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has stated emphatically that the demise of Prof John Evans Atta Mills, who was then flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), will not change their campaign strategy.
There have been suggestions Mills’ death will bring about a change in the party’s strategy since most of their campaign messages were focused on the late President.
But Mustapha Hamid, Spokesperson for the NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo told Joy FM’s elections analysis programme, Election Headquarters Monday that their campaign is based on the NDC’s track record.
That track record, he said, includes almost four years of incompetence, corruption, joblessness, and falling standard of education.
“I don’t think that since last Tuesday when President Mahama assumed the Presidency somehow all of these have so fundamentally turned 360 digress and that everything has been restored to health again,” he noted.
According to him, John Mahama has been the Chairman of the economic management team and therefore cannot extricate himself from the incompetence the government has become noted for.
He said the then Vice President was the Number Two man, under President Mill’s administration, “who had effectively been in charge all this while … it is about the record of the NDC and what it has been able to deliver as a government.”
“President Mahama will not bring anything” to the table, Mustapha Hamid stressed.
General Secretary of the NPP, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, also speaking on the matter said the party is not going to change its strategy.
“The strategy will not change … for us it is not about Mills as a person, it is about the governance of the country,” he said.
As to whether a Vice Presidential candidate selected by John Mahama will pose a challenge to the NPP, Mr Afriyie retorted, “Whoever partners John Mahama will never change anything,” adding the country’s economic woes will still be the same.
