Hundreds of vegetable farmers in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region say they will run out of work if the government fails to do something about electricity tariff in the country.

According to them, they have not been able to pump water to irrigate their farms because of the high price charged on electricity.

The aggrieved farmers marched through the principal streets of Keta on May 31 to present a petition to the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama through the Municipal Chief Executive.

Speaking to Joy News, leader of the tomato farmers in Keta, Roland Tudzi expressed worry about the situation.

He disclosed the challenges farmers are facing bordered around the generation of power which he said has come about because of the recent increment in the electricity tariff.

Proffering a solution to the government, he said “The long term solution is the use of the solar pumping units.”

“As a result we are appealing to government to look critically at the solar energy option and subsidize it to enable the farmers own the solar panels,” he continued.

Mr Tudzi appealed to the government to help save irrigated agriculture from collapsing by putting in place a separate cost effective tariff for the agriculture sector.
