A parade of elephants from a forest reserve on the Ghana-Burkina Faso border has pulled down a 2012 campaign billboard of President John Mahama in the Bagli village of the Laura Nandom vicinity. The incident took place on Friday April 12, 2013.Residents, according to eyewitnesses, were struck with awe upon seeing the elephants vandalise the billboards. Some spiritualists are said to be reading superstitious meanings into it since the elephant is the logo of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) which is seeking to overturn the Electoral Commission’s declaration of Mr Mahama as president. While some believe the incident is a harbinger of how the election petition case will pan out at the Supreme Court, others have simply brushed it aside as a mere accident on the part of the marauding elephants. An eyewitness who spoke to XYZ news, Mahama Awudu, said “All of a sudden, they [elephants] pulled down John Mahama’s billboard and ran back into the bush...”He said: “The mallams and the traditionalists have given their own interpretations” into the incident. Awudu added that politicians in that locality have also put a political twist on the incident.“Poeple are saying that ... it means victory for the elephant family”, as far as the NPP 2012 flagbearer Nana Addo Dankwa’s challenge at the election results is concerned.“Other people are saying John Mahama’s family will handover, [and be] subdued“, he added.
