The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, is seeking the support of the Asantehene to resolve the institution’s recent leadership crisis.
This week, a Cape Coast High Court granted an injunction filed by John Mevemeo, a resident of Millennium City-Kasoa in the Central Region, against the Vice-Chancellor.
The court's decision restrains Prof. Nyarko Boampong from acting as Vice-Chancellor.
This follows the university's decision to renew Prof. Nyarko Boampong's appointment until July 31, 2026.
Subsequently, lawyers for the embattled VC filed for a stay of execution.
Addressing a special congregation to confer a doctorate on the Asantehene, the Vice-Chancellor called for Otumfuo’s intervention.
"Your Majesty, we invite you to join forces with our Chancellor, Sir Samuel Esson Jonah and other like Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, Omanhene of the Oguaa traditional area, in leading efforts to maintain peace and stability at the University of Cape Coast. Just as your ancestors and their Fante counterparts found ways to coexist and build a stronger society, we too must find ways to overcome our current challenges and forge a brighter future for this institution."
Prof. Nyarko Boampong expressed concern that the current challenges facing the university were harming its administration and called on the Asantehene to intervene before the situation worsens.
"Today, however, we face new challenges—ones that threaten to unravel the progress we have made. Recent attempts to undermine the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor are reminiscent of the uncertainties that once plagued our university. Such actions, driven by external pressures, risk plunging us back into an era of confusion and instability. It is at this critical juncture that we turn to your leadership, Your Majesty," he said.
Prof. Nyarko Boampong says under his dispensation as Vice-Chancellor, the university has witnessed bold infrastructural developments, enhanced research capabilities, and the establishment of globally recognized centers of excellence. He emphasized that the university's academic standards have soared, elevating our global rankings and attracting scholars and students from around the world. These achievements, he avers, have positioned UCC as a beacon of higher education in Africa.
