The Chief Executive Officer of Chartma Herbal Health Centre, Dr Charity Twumasi Ankrah, says emotional and mental well-being play a critical role in men’s sexual performance, stressing that many challenges in the bedroom are rooted more in stress than physical incapacity.

Speaking on Joy Prime's Let's Talk show, Dr Ankrah explained that for a man to perform well sexually, he must first be emotionally and mentally relaxed.

According to her, pressure from work, finances and family responsibilities can significantly affect performance.

“Before a man can have proper sex, he must be relaxed emotionally and mentally, and be in a good mood,” she said.

“A lot of things have changed. Financial pressure, additional responsibilities, and unmet expectations at home can all play on the mind. By the time he gets to bed, the mind is already tired.”

She contrasted this with the relative ease often observed among younger couples, noting that fewer responsibilities and lower stress levels tend to allow for more spontaneity and energy.

“When there are fewer worries, the body responds differently,” she added.

Dr Ankrah, who is also the head of Chartma Herbal Training College, Chartma Vocational Training Institute and Chartma Consult, said many men wrongly assume their difficulties are purely medical when lifestyle and emotional strain are major contributors.

She urged couples and health practitioners to look beyond medication and consider holistic approaches to sexual health.

“We have to look into the case properly,” she noted. “Sometimes, a simple change in diet and lifestyle can solve the problem.”
