A total of 250,000 energy saving bulbs have been handed over to the Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Alhassan Samari, at a ceremony for distribution free of charge to consumers.
The bulbs are part of six million bulbs imported by the Ministry of Energy in its attempt to conserve energy to reduce the stress on the Akosombo dam.
The National Zonal Co-ordinator for the Northern Sector of Energy Saving Bulbs, Mr Alhassan Osman who presented the bulbs said the bulbs are low consuming ones from 9 to 20 watts while the incandescent bulbs are between 40 and 100 watts, hence the decision to switch over to the new bulbs.
Receiving them Mr Alhassan Samari commended government for the initiative to save the Akosombo dam from collapse.
The decision, he noted, was indicative of government’s desire not only to save the dam but also to ensure that electricity reached every part of the country.
Assuring that the bulbs would reach the targeted consumers, he warned that the bulbs are not for sale.
