On Saturday, May 14, 2022, the Ghana Football Association in collaboration with the eSports Association of Ghana held the maiden edition of the eTrophy Championship in Ghana.
According to the general secretary of the Ghana FA, Prosper Harrison Addo, the initiative was to help select maiden players for the national team with Ghana receiving an official invitation to take part in the eNations Championship to take place in Denmark later this year.
After hours of gaming at the Alisa Hotels in Accra, Prince Jonas (winner), Habibu Sulley (first runner-up), Frank Kpakpo (second runner-up) and Frempp (fourth) ended up being the top four winners among 32 gamers and were officially endorsed by the FA.
Explaining the purpose of the event to JoySports, Addo said, "I think from the beginning we set out to deliver a competition that would create the enabling environment for gamers in Ghana to exhibit their skills and to showcase their talents through which we can select our maiden national team."
"I know with time there will be more competitions for us to revamp the team but at the moment these are the best from this tournament and you could see how cagey and competitive it was. So I think that we have worked very well from day one and we have had a good understanding of what we want to do and we set out to deliver such a nice tournament for the gamers. We can only build from here."
Doreen Dabi-Diamond, general secretary of Esports Association, Ghana, added that her association is willing to work hand in hand with the Ghana FA to provide the needed support to ensure the growth of the sport in Ghana.
"We are just going to continue with the work we are doing for GFA - consulting whenever they need our help as we are there as the Esports association of Ghana to provide the needed sports. They want to continue doing this so we are ready to give them a helping hand as we did today and it was clear that our support is very needed," she said.
The Black Comets, the newest addition to the national teams, are set to begin their quest for global glory when they take part in the eSeries which begins on Friday, May 20.
