The Deputy Attorney General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, has dismissed allegations that National Security operatives stole money and jewellery during a legal search on the home of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison.
Speaking on JoyNews PM Express on Monday, March 24, Dr Srem-Sai stated that Dr Addison has not filed any official complaint regarding missing items.
He described the claims, initially made by the Minority in Parliament, as baseless.
"We know that if something is lost or is missing, the first thing you do as a lawyer or advise your clients to do is report to the police.
"As we speak, no reports have been made. These are bear allegations of basically no basis. We (AG) can only relay what we have, and we have done two briefings on this matter," he said.
The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, had accused National Security operatives of taking GH₵10,000 and jewellery belonging to Dr. Addison’s wife during the search.
However, Dr. Srem-Sai dismissed these claims, arguing that they serve only to ridicule those performing official duties.
"He (Addison) has no basis to support the allegation that the minority made, that the persons who went to search were hungry boys looking for food.
“These are ways of just ridiculing people who are doing official work. I think that it's time the minority took a step to avoid some of these things,” he said.
The Deputy AG stated that if Dr Addison has any grievances, the proper channel is to file an official complaint rather than allowing third parties to make unverified accusations.
“What we have is what I've put out, that whatever happened there was done cordially. Of course, if Dr Addison has any issues, the only way we can investigate that is when he makes a complaint. But not when a third party who was neither present nor had any connection with the event decides to make allegations,” Dr Srem-Sai added.
