Three former executives of the Junior Common Room of Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana, who were cited for financial impropriety are yet to comply with a directive of the committee that investigated allegations of financial misappropriation.They were asked to refund and fully account for over ¢91 million.The three, Benjamin Akyena Brantuo, Bright Nkrumah and Enoch Ampomah Danso, former president, vice-president and treasurer of the JCR respectively, were asked by the audit committee to refund the amount being a shortfall in the JCR’s accounts.Mr. Brantuo, who levelled allegations of financial misconduct against the Hall Master, Professor Harry Akussah, was also asked to apologise publicly to the professor after the committee had exonerated him from any wrongdoing.When contacted, the former JCR vice-president, Mr. Nkrumah, said it was unfortunate that before the Vice Chancellor accepted the committee’s report, they were not given the opportunity to react to it as they had been told earlier."Having accepted the report fully, we were left with no option but to write to the VC stating our case and asking him to reconsider his stance but up till now, we have not received any response to the letters we wrote," he said.Mr. Nkrumah said for now, they were waiting to hear from the VC’s office.According to him, as soon as the report was released, the Commonwealth Hall also withdrew their residential status thereby rendering them non-residential students.When contacted, Prof. Akussah confirmed that the three had neither complied with the committee’s directive nor apologised to him."I wrote to the affected students reminding them of the directives but I have still not received any response; a situation I have duly communicated to the VC’s office," he said.Presenting its report last month, the committee described the allegation that Prof. Akussah had diverted ¢1.5 billion from the JCR funds as ‘false, baseless and mischievous".Subsequently, the Vice-Chancellor directed Mr. Brantuo to retract the allegation he had made, give it the wide publicity it was given when he made it and also write a letter of apology to the Hall Master.The committee recommended that the final results and certificates of all the three final students be withheld should they fail to comply with the directives.Source: The Ghanaian Times
