Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, a stalwart of Ghanaian politics, has once again taken the mantle as Speaker of Parliament, vowing to leverage his unparalleled experience to guide the 9th Parliament.
In his acceptance speech, he emphasised the themes of unity, collaboration, and the pivotal role of Parliament as a “bulwark of democracy.”
Alban Bagbin, who holds the distinction of being Ghana’s longest-serving legislator, highlighted his evolution as a leader.
“I came to the Speaker of the Eighth Parliament with my experience as the longest legislator of the House.
"I now come to the 9th Parliament not only with that background but with the experience of four years of speakership in a very difficult hung parliament,” he noted.
His tenure leading the 8th Parliament, marked by its unique composition and challenges, has honed his ability to navigate political intricacies.
With this foundation, Mr Bagbin promised to apply lessons learned to foster greater efficiency and effectiveness in the 9th Parliament.
As Speaker, Mr Bagbin’s leadership is critical in maintaining balance and order in a Parliament that continues to reflect the country’s polarized political landscape.
He appealed to members for trust and cooperation: “Honorable Members of Parliament-elect, I am very grateful for the privilege and confidence you have reposed in me to be Speaker and to help this honourable House once more.”
Alban Bagbin’s message was clear—fostering collaboration is paramount. His tenure will be dedicated to guiding the House to perform its constitutional mandate diligently while prioritizing the needs of the Ghanaian people over political divisions.
Addressing the nation, Mr Bagbin underscored the role of Parliament in safeguarding Ghana’s democracy.
“I promise to bring all these experiences to bear in guiding this House to perform its mandate with efficiency, diligence, and above all, with a sense of being the bulwark of democracy in Ghana,” he affirmed.
The Speaker also called on Ghanaians to engage actively with Parliament’s work.
“To the good people of Ghana who continue to hope for a better Ghana, I urge you to support your Parliament and be interested and engaged with the work of Parliament,” he said, signalling a commitment to transparency and inclusivity.
The Speaker’s speech also reflected a shift in approach, acknowledging the need for Parliament to operate with a sense of responsibility befitting its elevated role in governance.
“Today’s timing is not conducive for confrontation,” he noted, stressing a leadership style rooted in maturity, diplomacy, and strategic decision-making.
As Mr Bagbin assumes leadership of the 9th Parliament, his first duties include swearing in the newly elected Members of Parliament and overseeing the election of Deputy Speakers.
These ceremonial but significant acts will set the tone for a term he envisions as marked by unity and progress.
In a final note of gratitude, Alban Bagbin acknowledged the weight of the trust placed in him: “Once again, I am very grateful for this great honour.”
