J initiative (JI) has taken a giant step to partner Facebook, the National Communications Authority (NCA) and others to create a platform for safety and security issues for children and young people in the virtual world.

According to Facebook and the Ghanaian non-governmental organization dedicated to raising awareness on issues that affect families, especially women and children, J Initiative, so many children are abused and negatively influenced on social media each passing day which consequences have negative effects on the development of the children.

Speaking at the Safer Internet Day celebration in Accra, CEO of J Initiative, and Awo Aidam Amenyah set out the thinking points that the campaign hinges on and calledon Parents to view the campaign as a collective interest that will ultimately protect future generations.

“I would like you to explore what better Internet means to all users; highlight safe and responsible uses of technology that will enable you have a better understanding of your roles and responsibility in shaping a better Internet and discuss the impact of technology on our lives and what this means for children and young people as the creators, entrepreneurs, consumers and leaders of today and tomorrow.”

Launching the internet Safety guides for use in schools and other places where social media thrives, Awo Aidam Amenya ralliedtogether participants who have voluntarily chosen to be a part of the campaign not to downplay the shared and collective interest to protect children.

“Our doors are still open for your school or community specific outreaches. It is a matter of getting the request to us in good time. During the next few months, you will be getting to know more about our different initiatives through our planned activities and special events where you will be able to join in and get your very own hands on experiences if need be.”

Parents and other Adults   as part of the list of guides launched have been   empoweredto think before sharing posts on social media and cultivate practices that will make internet use safer and better.

The program, Safer Internet Day (SID) is run by the INSAFE network and is celebrated every year across Europe, and in other countries worldwide.  Speakers at this year’s forum, addressed issues on staying safe on Facebook and owning responsibility for one’s social media platforms etc.

“We also appreciate the fact that this year, the theme looks beyond just safety but goes to stress the need not building children and young people’s resilience to thrive within the cyber space. In order to have greater effect, apart from the Facebook and the National Communications Authority, interested institutions like Aquatork, infoboxxdaily, Surfline, PopOut Ghana GhOneTV, among others.” J Initiative stated.

The theme for this year’s celebration was “Play your part for a better Internet.”
