Members of Parliament on Thursday began debating the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission Bill.Government announced the setting up of a Fair Wages Commission in this year's budget to undertake job evaluation with a view to determining the relative worth of all Public Sector positions. But as the debate preceding the passage of the Bill begins, some MPs say the Commission is not the answer to the problems on the labour front.According to some, care must be taken so the Commission does not usurp the functions and powers of existing regulatory bodies and labour agencies as the Labour Commission and the Public Services Commission. The argument is vehemently opposed to by others, including Deputy Attorney General and MP for Nsuta-Kwamang Beposo, Kwame Osei Prempeh. He said the fear should not arise at all because the Fair Wages Commission would be working under the auspices of the Public Services Commission, which is a statutory body and its role would be to complement the PSC.Kwame Osei Prempeh said in relation to the National Labour Commission, the FWSC would become a grievance settling body to support the NLC and should litigants be dissatisfied with its settlements, they may apply to the NLC itself which may act as the High Court.
