Bismarck Klu, a 24-year-old farmer of Ve-Koloenu in the Hohoe Municipality suspected to be mentally ill, has been remanded by the Hohoe Circuit Court for raping his 85-year-old grandmother, blind and bedridden with stroke.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and is billed to re-appear on October 11, when his sanity or otherwise would have been determined.
Prosecuting, Mr Ben Dadzie, Assistant Superintendent of Police, told the court that a complainant and witness in the case heard the screaming of the octogenarian and responded only to find Bismarck having a sexual intercourse with the victim in her room.
The complainant raised the alarm, he said, which led to the arrest of the suspect who was subsequently handed over to the Police.
Mr Dadzie said the suspect denied having sexual intercourse with the victim but admitted entering her room.
He was arraigned after investigations.
Meanwhile, the suspect has been referred to the Psychiatric Hospital at Pantang in the Greater Accra Region for examination as a preliminary assessment by the Hohoe Hospital suggested he had a mental problem.
