Kwaku Nimo Kyei, a farmer, was on Tuesday sentenced to 18 months in prison in hard labour by the Kade District Magistrate’s Court for theft. He pleaded guilty with explanation to two counts of unlawful entry and stealing. Police Inspector Francis Cobbina, prosecuting, told the court presided over by Mr Abdul Majid Iliasu that the complainant, Gifty Addo, was a trader, whilst Kyei, the farmer, resided at Anweam. He said on July 30, the complainant travelled from Asamankese to Anweam for a funeral and she and two others were accommodated in one room. The next day, at about 0230 hours, whiles the complainant and the two others were asleep, Kyei sneaked into their room, took the complainant’s travelling bag and hand bag containing her personal belongings worth about GH¢ 155 and a cash of GH¢ 250. The complainant suddenly woke up and raised the alarm which attracted people to the house and gave Kyei a hot chase but all efforts to get him arrested failed. Prosecution said at about 0600 hours, Kyei was spotted in town by the complainant who raised the alarm leading to his arrest. Kyei then led the complainant to a nearby bush where he had hidden the bags, however, the complainant’s clothes valued at GH¢ 25.00 and cash of GH¢ 250.00 were nowhere to be found. Kyei was handed over to the police and a stealing case made against him. In his caution statement, Kyei admitted the offence but said it was a friend, Kwaku Apito, who broke into the room and called him at home to join him. Kyei claimed Apito gave him GH¢ 210 while he took the rest of the money. Source: GNA
