The Yendi MP, Farouk Aliu Mahama has pleaded with his colleague minority Members of Parliament to respect the decision of the High Court to proceed with a daily hearing of the criminal case against Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson.
He was responding to a question from host Ayisha Ibrahimon on JoyNews’ The Probe on Sunday, on whether the Majority was interested in intervening in Gyakye Quayson's case so that the Minority could return to the House.
He said when it comes to justice matters and rule of law, not even the president can intervene.
He, therefore, called on the NDC MPs to rescind their boycott and “leave the courts and the work of the judiciary in the hands of the competent people.”
“What can be done is that they should have a will within the courts, but for the government itself trying to intervene in this is something that is unacceptable.”
The Accra High Court presided over by Justice Mary Yanzuh has ruled that starting from July 4, 2023, the trial of Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson for alleged perjury would be heard on a daily basis.
But the NDC has protested, while notable public figures have appealed to the president and the Attorney General to file a nolle prosequi in the criminal charges.
The NDC members of parliament, backed by party leaders, have resorted to boycotting parliament sittings to accompany Quayson to court to solidarise with him.
In the course of the week, the caucus reiterated its resolve to stick by the boycott, and said it will announce a new strategy to escalate the protest.
The new strategy is to continuously raise matters of quorum for meetings of Parliament, literally shutting the House down.

But Mr Aliu Mahama says it is not out of place for the Assin North MP, Gyakye Quayson to be asked to appear in court on a daily basis.
He added that the NDC MP “appearing on a daily basis is a decision of the court therefore it must be respected.”
The legislator urged the Minority to refrain from using the court’s decision as a bargaining chip to boycott parliamentary proceedings.
He explained that if the NDC MPs take that course, then they are rather prioritising Gyakye Quayson over the expectation of Ghanaians.
Mr Mahama called for consensus building in the House.
“There should be some consensus building. Obviously, God gave us this 8th Parliament so we cannot run away from that, it is a test case, and cooperation is important. Leadership must come together and we Members of Parliament must look at Ghana first and carry our duties as MPs,” he said.
