A father and his son have appeared before a circuit court at Asamankese charged with possessing a quantity of Indian hemp. Samuel Odoi, a farmer and scrap dealer and his son, a junior high school student, both pleaded not guilty to the charge. Additionally, Odoi faces a further charge of possessing a bundle of stolen copper cable. He pleaded not guilty to this other charge. Whereas Odoi was remanded to reappear on December 3, Aboagye was granted 50 million cedis bail with one surety to re-appear alongside his father. Police Chief Inspector C.D. Bruce, told the court presided over by Mr Kofi Akrowiah that policemen, acting on information that scrap dealers had created a market for unpatriotic citizens who were stealing copper wires, the Kade District Police Command led by ASP Samuel Yeboah decided to conduct a search on scrap dealers in the area. When the police advanced towards Odoi's house his son dashed into a room and picked a mini jute sack and started to run into the bush with it. The prosecutor said police and others around gave the boy a hot chase and arrested him. When the sack was opened, a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp was found concealed in a black polythene bag. When the house was later searched, one bundle of copper cable wire was found together with an amount of 880,000 cedis. The prosecutor said police suspected that the amount was part of proceeds from sale of the hemp. Odoi denied ownership of the dried leaves but said he bought the copper wire in Accra to wire his house about four years ago. Source: GNA
