Workers of the Forestry Commission have been expressing their delight over their landslide victory in a second verification exercise, which has confirmed their membership of the Timber and Woodworkers' Union (TWU) of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC).
A nation-wide verification exercise carried out on July 3, this year at the instance of the TUC Executive Board was to determine a three-year old impasse as to whether the TWU or the General Agricultural Workers' Union (GAWU) had the majority membership of the staff of the Commission to be issued with a Collective Bargaining Certificate (CBC).
A source close to the Forestry Commission Local Union said that the verification conducted by the Labour Department had vindicated their earlier decision to join TWU since 2003 at their National Delegates' Conference held in Kumasi.
According to the source the elated workers had therefore called on the Labour Department to make public the full results of the verification exercise as soon as possible to set the records straight by issuing them with a new valid CBC to enable them to review their over-due conditions of service.
The source blamed GAWU for stifling all efforts by the Forestry Commission workers in the past to give them a free hand to determine the union to which they wish to belong.Source: GNA
